Disk error problem

I’hv got my intel 850 system with 40gb hd and 128mb ram with intel chipset810E motherboard.My problem is that time to time my boot record gets erased and the bios shows disk error. My partitions are C: of 1.4gb and others are of 5-8 gb.Is this creating a problem or the bios which is of year 2000, shoul i upgrade it ?
