disks needs to be checked fo consistency

I am running xp professional and have suddenly started getting this message. “One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency” I allow the scan and the computer reboots, but now is running so slowly I am dead in the water. There are no viruses present and everything else seems to be in working order. What could be causing this slow down? Thanks, Jennie
