display problem on dell inspiron 8500

by mejoelee . Updated 21 years, 7 months ago

the 1920×1200 lcd panel on my dell inspiron 8500 laptop recent started looking funny. it seems to be dithering or doing something that produces an image that is similar to (but not totally) a photo negative. furthermore, i can see some sort of static or noise in areas that are of certain colors.

the display properties indicate that i am still running the display in 32bit/60hz mode. switching resolution and bit depth make no difference. i am unable to set the refresh rate through the software to anything other than 60hz. windows drivers are up to date. bios is up to date.

from time to time, the display looks normal again for a short while, then goes back to looking funny. i’m fairly sure it’s a hardware issue. problem exists when i boot under xp pro sp2 and also red hat linux 9. laptop is about 15 months old.

any idea what is going on? do i have to send it back to dell or can i take it to a local repair shop?

thanks in advance for any information that can help me identify and correct the problem.
