DNS – 2000 Domain

Maybe a stupid question, but…
When I set up a 2000 domain and create the first DC it sets up DNS, and 2000 clients on the domain seem to need to use it as their primary DNS in order to function properly on the domain. If I have broadband Internet, the clients also need to point to a DNS for the Internet, but the DNS on the root DC will not support forwarding. The way I have worked around this in the past, has been to install DNS on another server, make it a secondary to the roots DNS and set up forwarding on it. Is there a better way? Small businesses shouldn’t have to have two servers to function. ?
