I just setup a small home network, windows 2000, with one DNS server. let’s call it DC1.
I installed Active Directory, with a domain of ‘myhouse.com’. I use AD Integrated Zone. I also configured it as a root server, for mydomain.com, and I enabled forwarders, which include my ISP’s DNS numbers.
I also created an Alias record for dc1.mydomain.com as www.mydomain.com.
I registered the domain name as www.myhouse.com. At the website where I registered my domain name, I can input name servers.
I don’t know what name servers to list there. Should I list my dc1.mydomain.com as a name server? or should I list www.mydomain.com?
Or should it be one of my ISP’s?
The way I have it set up now, is one name server is dc1.mydomain.com and the second one belongs to my ISP. However, when I ping www.mydomain.com, it can’t find the host. If I ping dc1.mydomain.com, it comes back with a reply (209.x.x.x)
I want to be able to type in ‘ping www.mydomain.com’, anywhere in the world, and have my IP address (209.x.x.x)
I’ve read so many DNS articles on how the a name is being resolved, and I’m still confused when it comes to checking if i’ve set it up correctly.
