Here is the setup. We have a 2000 AD domain which is using a UNIX BIND server (v 8.2.5) for the primary zone. This BIND server controls both the internal and external DNS records. We have created the 4 sub zones for Active directory. Our Active Directory domain name is the same as the DNS zone on the BIND server. We have two domain controllers which have WINS and DNS on both. All IP addresses are static (No DHCP). These is one forest with one domain.
Here is the problem, within about 5-6months here will be a DNS change. The ‘powers that be’ have decided that the external DNS will be controlled by the UNIX BIND server, and the internal DNS can be handled by Windows 2000 AD. The current DNS name is like COMPANY.DOMAIN.COM The new internal
domain name would be LOCAL.DOMAIN.COM Currently there is not a local or second domain name. Only the first name
My question is this….. What would be the best way to change the current AD domain to a new AD domain? Or would it be possible to rename the domain?
What options are available and also what ‘gotchas’ should we be aware. Any
info at this point would be appreciated. There are several months to plan,
but we need to begin making thinking everything through at this time.
