Domain Missing after locking machine

Has anyone ever seen where the NT 4.0 logon domain is missing after the machine automatically locks the workstation. The machine is seen on the network but your unable to remote to the pc to reboot. Asked the user to try and place the domain\password in the password field and that fails. Rebooting corrects the problem but I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to what causes this.
