DOS App Full Screen

I have found if you have a shortcut to a DOS app and set it full screen, the font seems compressed. If you take the same DOS app and start it in windowed mode and then do an ALT-Enter to bring it full screen, the screen looks proper. Any ideas why ?is there a fix to this ?
