downloading video from DV

I have installed PCI firewire card and used firewire cable to connect to my canon DV. The problem is that the video software states that there is no capture device detected. I have check the firewire card through device manager and it states that the card is ok. I have no idea how to get my windows XP to find my DV. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
