Dr. Watson for Windows NT error

When users are trying to open a saved XL 97 file they receive the following error message “An application error has occurred and an application error is being generated. EXCEL.exe. Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address:xxxxxxxxxx

XL then shuts down. What is the problem?
