I’m having a few problems with my Compaq Presario 2504EU laptop. I use Windows XP. I appear to have lost some program files and drives are not working properly. (Had been working fine for over a year before now.)
1. Cannot no longer go through IE to get onto the internet – computer tries to download web pages as files now instead – get a prompt saying ‘save’ or ‘open’ file, but computer then unable to attach a program to associate with the internet to open.
2. Unable to print documents. Computer goes through process of printing, but no results from the printer although that goes through process of spooling paper as if there’s information there.
3. Unable to copy files to CD through CD burner. Error message in CD Burner wizard to say no recordable CD in disk drive. (Although I have tried blank CD-R and CD-RW in the drive.)
4. In Windows XP, no files appear in the drop down box for ‘All Programs’.
5. System Restore page comes up blank.
Some things do work though. I can view jpeg files of photos in Nikon Viewer and through standard Windows XP by locating them on the computer. End last year I downloaded Apple iTunes, and that operates. I can listen to all files in there, and play music CDs on the disk drive. Also able to download music from the Apple iStore when the modem cable is attached. So there’s some access to the outside world. MSN Messenger also seems to be operational.
I’m no techie, so does anyone have any ideas? There are the system recovery files, but I don’t want to risk losing all the music and photo files on the laptop.
