DVD Drive Clicks

I have an HP Pavilion N5415 laptop with a DVD-ROM from approx 2001. The DVD drive quit being able to read a game CD. The drive won’t recognize anything so I replaced it with a duplicate drive from a parts laptop and it did the same thing !?!?!?? HP already suggested removing the drive from the device manager and a patch from dougknox.com but obviously neither fixed the issue. I presume this is hardware related somehow since the other drive didn’t work either.
