DVD drive shows as cd rom drive

My DVD drive shows in the root directory as a cd drive when I insert a DVD. When the PC first boots it shows as a DVD drive. If I put in a disk it just spins continuously.
I have read in several places Roxio can cause problems but I have had Roxio for a year and used it quite a bit with no prev problems.
Any suggestions, I am not a techie so please be basic. Thanks in advance for any suggestions
