dvd powers down system

Has anyone ever seen a DVD player actually shut down a system? If a disk is in the drive on boot, it will shut off instantly. If you read a DVD/cd after XP H.E. starts, it will read and then shut down (power off). I have subst. several different drives DVD and CDRW, CD etc. It is a master on IDE1 with nothing else on the cable. I have switched controller channels etc.. system has run about 6months, when end user had problem. I did find some spyware, but very dif. to clean. Just finished a fresh OS load with same results. CMOS settings appear right. MSI mobo AM2/ AMD. It is using a SATA hd and runs fine otherwise. I have not reformatted the HD yet….just an OS overlay. Any Ideas?
