DVD ROM will not play DVD’s — omgz

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. Recently the computer was reformatted. This computer has a DVD Rom drive. Whenever I place a DVD in the computer though, no program will recognise it, and it is as if there is no DVD at all or anything in the drive. When going into my computer, the disc drive won’t recognise there being a DVD in it also. Is there anything I can do to solve this problem, and get my computer to read DVDs again? I appreciate the help
