DVD-RW is not working properly

Hi i have Dell dimension 1100. I replaced my CD-drive with my sister’s DVD-drive. But is there a program where I have to install for the DVD drive to work? my computer doesn’t detect the DVD-drive and ever since I put in the new drive my computer is VERY SLOW.
