DVI or VGA

I recently purchase a new computer. THe computer I purchased has a 19 LCD and the hp did not put a dvi connection on the computer, obviously i have it on the lcd. My question is if I buy a vga to dvi converter/adapter ($10) will the adapter transmit the image is digital or as analog. Or should I just buy a video card with dvi connection ($50-$200)?
