Greetings all. I am currently deployed in Iraq with the 8th Communications Battalion of the Marine Corps. I haven’t ever looked into EFS until last night… which is probably why I’m having problems :). I have a simple question for anyone that has a basic knowledge of EFS for XP Pro SP2. I have a external HDD that I will refer to as EX1. I have a personal laptop that will be referred to as PC1, and a work laptop/s that will be referred to as WC1. Now my question is this… if I have files on EX1 that are encrypted via PC1 for security reasons and then brought EX1 and attached it to WC1 to retrieve work related information from our domain (D)…then why would my EFS files be inaccessible once EX1 was returned to PC1? Another newbie question is…how can I assure that my filenames are private as well? On a domain where I do not have domain admin privileges. Without the use of folder “security” and “Privileges” (domain sets local policies to override any privileges).
Some information on what I did to utilize EFS:
-Did the basic right click… properties… attributes… etcetera.
-Exported personal cert for EFS (EFS.pfx) to a pen drive.
-Confirmed cert on pen drive, deleted cert from PC1.
Thanks for reading my post and GREAT site!!! Makes embarrassment less likely at work 🙂
