Embed comments in regular expressions

The July 1 Perl e-newsletter says that one way to resolve complaints that Perl regular expressions are difficult to understand is to use Perl’s extended regular expression syntax, which allows embedded comments and extra whitespace for readability. What experience have you had embedding comments in regular expressions?
