error 39 Dvd cd rom matsushita drive uj-840D missing

Colleague was deleting files from add/remove may have deleted above drive (oem) and windvd. Cant initiate the cd rom, cant roll back, cant re-install, cant update, cant find download… cant do much actually lol. She has plus plus bugs in her system which are proving hard to kill (viruses) plus the dreaded blue stuff is appearing. Would reinstalling from her windows xp re load the drivers and kill any remainig bugs? The main points are will re install kill any viruses and reload any lost drives. Thanks
