I?m running WinNt SBS 4.5 on my server. All of the network users are configured to use the internet through the proxy server. A few days ago some users complained that they couldn?t connect to the internet. When they opened their browsers they were getting an error that the page cannot be displayed. I checked the dial up connection on the server and it was connecting to our ISP, and our e-mail was working, so the connection wasn?t the problem. I noticed that if I went to their IE explorer and changed the LAN Setting in the connections tab in the internet options to automatically detect setting instead of checking the box to use the proxy server, they were able to get online. So it seems to be something wrong with the proxy server. But I don?t know too much about Proxy server and I have no idea how to fix it. I tried to go to the proxy server management console on the start menu and I get the following error:
Error connecting to Mainserver(the name of our server): The data is invalid. I get the same error when I go to the IIS management console. I looked in the application event log and found the following error: ?The IISADMIN service is not available, so virtual roots cannot be indexed.? I checked the services in control panel to see if they were all started and I found that the World wide web publishing service was not started even though it was set to automatic. When I tried to manually start it it couldn?t start. I also was unable to access the SBS Console. I got an error that the page could not be displayed. I?m not sure if all of these errors are related, but they all happened around the same time and they all seem to be pointing to something with the proxy or IIS services. I don?t know too much about proxy or IIS server and I don?t know what to do next. I?d really appreciate if someone can help me out with this.
