Evasive files

Preface:
In Windows ME, on a Compaq, “Internet Ready” Machine. Removed the TI ADSL card and replaced it with a LAN card.
Excellent connection.
Just for peace of mind sake, even though the connection worked properly, I went into the control panel to navagate to the device manager.
That last look for conflicts and such.
The control panel window came up, said there were 36 files, but nothing was visible.
Question:
Why can’t they be seen, and how do I get them back?
