Explorer has caused an error in mfc42.dl

When I try to load Internet Explorer I receive the error “Explorer has caused an error in mfc42.dll”. The OS is WIN ME, Internet Explorer is version 5.5. I have tried: install latest roxio/adaptec patches, system restore, extract mfc42.dll, etc. to no avail. Please help.
