External CDRW

I want to purchase an external CDRW. If I buy a USB CDRW will I be able to make a mirror copy of my hard drive or do I need an internal one to do it in dos. Which program is easiest or quickest?
I have some experience with drive image but it takes place in dos so I am unsure an external cdrw will work. Thanks!
