External DVD-ram problem

My IBM external USB dvd writer is refusing to “settle down”. After plugging it in my USB port, it just attempts to read then several times before stopping and the process just loops. Sometimes it “stabalizes” when I tilt it on a specific angle. It would be such a bummer if it needed replacement already since this device is just barely a month old.
