External Hard Drive “Malfunctioned”

I bought an external hard drive about a month ago and have since transfered all of my movies/songs/series etc onto it. However i tried to load it up last night to watch the latest episode of Heroes and it came up with a message in the bottom right hand corner saying that the USB device had malfuctioned!!!

I have a feeling that it is something to do with my laptop as the same thing happened to my wireless internet receiver. I have tried to plug the Hard drive into a few of my friends PC’s/Laptops but it is still coming up with the same message.

Does anyone know if/how i can fix this? Be gutted if ive lost all of the data!!! Thanks
