External Hard Drive Problem

by jillhartness . Updated 18 years, 12 months ago

The other day my external hard drive fell off the coffee table onto a hardwood floor. I didn’t think much of it because it had fallen before and I hadn’t encountered any problems.

But this time, it wouldn’t pull up any of the information on the drive – kept saying I/O device error. I took the drive out of the casing and installed it as a slave drive on my PC. Now it is showing up as a local disk, however it’s showing 0 everything – absolutely nothing on the disk.

When I double click on it in My Computer it says that it isn’t formatted. However, I don’t want to format it for fear of losing everything that I have on that drive.

Anyone have any ideas of how I could recover the data? Or, am I completely out of luck? This hard drive has about 8 years worth of work on it and I would be absolutely devastated if I couldn’t recover ANY of it. Please help!
