External Hardrive Question

I have an external WD hardrive which I have partitioned and have saved my personal and backup files to on my desktop computer but when I hook it up to my new laptop (xppro too) it wants me to re-partition it and format the harddrive and I cannot access the information that has been saved..Once the hardrive is set up, how do I access it on another computer?
