Extract soundtrack from DVD Movie to MP3

My son-in-law wants to put a few of the sound tracks from his DVD’s on the hard drive of his portable computer to listen to while travelling out of town. Obviously the whole video plus sound would take too much space. Is there some software or other technique comparable to ripping an audio disk to mp3?
