fast and effecient sorting utility

Hello,
I am in need of sorting huge 2.5+ GB files by the first 20 characters. The sort included with the cmd line is terribly slow. Does anyone know of an utility that can maximize use of NT’s kernel memory and avoid efficiency issues with the virtual memory?
