FAT Missing

I have a 40 Gig Maxtor drive that was working fine and suddenly is not recognized. I tried to use it as a slave and look at it with Partition Magic. Instead of saying it is a FAT32 partition it says it is a Type 44 Hex drive. Is there a way to rebuild or recover the FAT? I have looked for recovery software but I’m not sure if it is worth the money.
