i’m running 98SE on a P!!! 933 with 512MB RAM. when the machine is booted i receive a fatal exception error 0E at 017F. i have tried many combinations of startup options and run many utilities to sort out the problem. the RAM seems to be ok (i’ve also tried one stick of RAM and both sticks on different DIMM slot combinations) as all the tests i have run to date come up with no problem (and certaiunly no bad RAM that can cause such errors).
i did receive once an 0B exception which i believe is when a memory segment is marked ‘not present’, though thats where my knowledge of it stops.
i tried using other utilities like startcop and got rid of most of the programs loaded at start up. for a while i thought i’d figured it out. i didn’t get an exception for some time. though thats usually how it works, a series of good boots and then the error.
after the recent 0B exception i rebooted and got the 0E exception again.
i’ve removed the himem.sys and emm386 lines from config.sys. i’ve removed the cd device driver from config.sys also. the only
thing i can’t get rid of is the sound blaster (vibra128) lines from autoexec.bat. ever time i delete them, they misteriously reappear
on the next boot. at one stage, every time i wouldselect shut down it would just restart, and then the problem just went away. also just after the 98 splash screen the machine tries to access the cd-rw drive and then the cdrom drive for some time. can’t seem to sort that one out either.
i’m stumped!!!
at the end of it all, does any of it sound like a motherboard problem?? any other ideas would be very much appreciated. as i really am stumped.
