Fatal Exception in Safe Mode

I usually run scandisk in Safe Mode, so I don’t have to worry about disk writes. With nothing else running, including the screen saver (Yes I also ran the latest Spybot and Adaware.), I am now getting the following error:

A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C00078C0 in VXD VMM (01) + 000068C0

I have searched the Internet, finding similar but not the same. I put Noton Utilities 2000 on it and ran NDD in DOS and got:
Error [35]: General protection fault in C:\progra~1\norton~!\ndd.exe at 0090:1674
Help, not ready to fromat and start over.
