Fax Modem Problem

I am using the standard Fax Management that comes with W2K. From time to time the fax modem picks up an incoming fax transmission as if it was another computer connecting to it & the fax fails. I believe this is caused from the sender’s older or personal fax machine waiting too long before it begins communicating. How can I prevent this from happening?
