File search in Windows XP

I have a bit of a strange problem. When I try to perform a file search in Windows XP, my PC stops responding. This happens no matter how I initiate the search (windows f, via explorer, right click, search, etc.). If I hit control/alt/del, the processor utilization is at the max as is the memory usage. I am pretty stumped. Any assistance would be helpful. System spec: custom PC w/ SOYO MB, 256MB PC2100 RAM, 1.3Ghz Athlon, ATI 128MB Radeon 8500LE. I have all the latest drivers.
