File timestamp changing without saving

Using a pc running win 2k and office xp I open an excel file on a linux share, upon opening the file the timestamp changes to the server time, when closing the file without saving the timestamp changes to the win2k system time. I repeated this on win98 with office xp, the timestamp doesn’t change. Why does it change with the win2k pc?
