Files taken off a external hard disc – can they be recovered from the hd

I have cut and copied a number of folder containing mp3’s off my external hard disc and pasted them into my usb memory stick (4gb). The stick is now not working!! Can I recover the files I copied off my external hard disc as I have not added anyhting to the external hard disc since I moved the files??
