I know 6 million people have already asked about this issue, but none of the solutions I have found worked for me so I have to ask… I have an Imation 4GB USB Clip drive that when I plug it into my work PC the New Hardware Wizard comes up, looks for the driver and can not find it (and they are “included” with XP)… This drive works in every other PC I have tried it in… I’ve also tried other Imation, San Disk, PNY, and various others USB flash drives and all give the same result… I also have a Multi-card reader installed that came with the PC, which one day disappeared and when I did the Add Hardware to get it back it also said it can not find the driver (the drivers for this device are also “included” in windows XP… When I first set the PC up (and for a long time after) everything worked fine, but then one day (many months ago) it all quit.. I suspect that since I have auto update turned on that something was installed that messed things up, but I have no idea what it might have been… Not understanding exactly how this stuff works, I don’t know if the issue is in the registry, or if it is with the driver files themselves, I’m pretty much at a lose for where to go from here…
I received a reply from Imation support and they said that the “Drivers” are not an actual file, but in the Windows XP registry and to look up my error code in device manager and then search microsoft for the solution, however, the error code is “Code 28” which is “device driver not installed” you can see where this is heading already… Anyhow, this leads me to believe that a simple regedit should be able to solve my problem, now it is a question of what to edit and the values required (I asked Imation for that info, lets see if they send it)…
