Formatting diskettes

I bought a box of diskettes (1.44MB)which says formatted; my computer shows an error (disks not formatted) and I can’t save to them. Is the whole box possibly defective or am I doing something wrong? My computer asks if I want them formatted then reads they are not formattable.
