hang up before shut down

I have a 2000 machine on my network that ever so often will hang up when you try to shut down.
There is nothing in the event logs that indicate what went wrong.
I’ve also tried to shut down with different programs still running and network shared files open. But alas the machine shut down like a dream 😉
No new programs where added (that I can see)
Is there any way I can troubleshoot this problem ?
