hard disk problem

I partitioned my hard disk. I put c: as a primary and d: as a extended dos partition. after installing win98 i try to open d: but not opened. it returns the warning as “Device is not accessible”.The device attached to the system is not functioning. Please give me some tips to rectify this problem
