Hard drive device name changed: no data

I’m running XP. Installed a new ST380011A 80 gig second HD, the same as my boot drive. Installation OK. Transferred 20gig to new drive. Rebooted this morning: data not found. Device manager now has the wrong device name: CT#80!1A. The data is still on the drive as only 60gig is shown available on the drive under Properties.
How do I get it back to being an ST3800011A without losing my data?
