Hard drive partition

I recently had to reformat my drive and decide to make two partions. I was told I could keep my data one one partion and not loose it if I problems with my operating system again. I have never worked with a partitioned hard drive and was wondering if someone could give me some insight or a good sight to read on how to store my data on my other partiton.
