hard lock in Toshiba laptop

I have a Toshiba Satallite 410CDT that will sometimes lock-up hard. The strange thing is that the only way I can get the thing to clear the lock-up so I can reboot is to take out the battery and unplug the power. If I don’t leave both of those things off of the laptop for around 3 hours, then my frozen desktop will still be there when I hit the power button.
