Hardrive read error

My ex desktop hardrive now in an external enclosure to plug into my laptop was working fine and now when i plug it in nothing reads.Data recovery programs pick up the hardrive but it is unknown,no manufaturer detection, no size detection! The drive is 120 gigs and programs tell me it is 0mb! What is the cause of this? and how do you determine physical damage? How do i fix this?
