Hardware Upgrade (memory)

I am upgrading the hardware on my nt server, precisely, memory. I am doubling the memory. Of course this causes a memory dump and the system doesn’t boot up. I know there is a way to upgrade the memory and or the cpu and still have a functioning OS. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. —rick!
