HD failure to Boot

I removed a HD from one of my computers and made it a slave in another then formated/s it in Dos then copied cabs files for windows98. Later I removed it put back in it’s original computer but it failed to boot. Later I managed to format it and installed windows98 but during the installation when it tries to reboot it hangs and fails to continue. Kindly help me out of this mess.
