Dear All,
This is avout a 60GB Maxtor UDMA133 PATA HDD, few months old. Recently, randomly, the drive would spin down and up again, with a varied pattern of frequency and duration as much as to crash the computer by consecutive spinup/downs duirng POST or in windows. The PSU connector on the drive did not fault other drives, but other PSU connectors did not improve the situation. Same with a different PSU.
There is also a randomly recurring problem during booting. Running Win XP Pro off a SATA drive on the ICH5R or a separate PATA drive on the 1ry IDE, randomly, I would get “A disk read error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to Restart” after POST. A random number of soft/hard reboots or shutdowns later the error would resolve itself. Overheating is not an issue.
At stock speeds, using 8KNXP-specific settings on motherboard monitor (MBM) 5.3.5.1, failsafe settings on BIOS and Top performance Not enabled, on an idle system reported voltages are:
CPU 1.58 (vs. 1.525 stock)
+2.58 to +2.60 (for +2.5)
+3.31 (for +3.3)
+4.99 (for +5.00)
+12.03 to +12.16 (for +12.00)
-11.99 to -12.08 (for -12.00)
-5.33 (for -5.00)
Components:
Gigabyte 8KNXP rev1.0 F9 BIOS DPS2 module installed, Intel P4 2.8c, Corsair TwinMX 2x512MB 3200LL, Antec 550 TruePower, Radeon 9700 Pro (PN# x-40) on isolated PSU connector, 1x 37GB WD Raptor SATA, 1x 80GB Maxtor UDMA133 PATA , 1x CDRW, 1x DVD-ROM.
That the 60Gb HDD only exhibits the spin down/up behaviour indicates to me it is failing. That the read error occured on either SATA or PATA indicates motherboard failure. MBM is reporting flickering voltages, the +2.5 a bit overvolted. I would welcome greatly opinions.
Kind regards,
Sterghios
