Help capturing USB hub

I am having a very difficult time trying to capture a multiple port generic USB hub. I have tried everything from installing and reinstalling drivers but it still comes up as an “unknown device” and that configuring is unnecessary. Yet I still cannot get my printer to communicate with the computer through this particular port. I had a driver installed for the primary ports and they worked just fine. Now that I have introduced a “splitter” if you will, I cannot get the USB to recognize the printer. I know this sounds like a silly question to you venerable technogeeks. But we all have to start somewhere. Thanks for any input into the matter.
