Help!! Windows XP Screen blank!!

As I do not have windows XP I do not know if there is such a feature as in WIN98 but my brother in law decided he wanted to go into properties on his screensaver or video settings and he clicked on something that said remove driver…well it did andthen promptly shut him down & when he rebooted his screen is black. WIN98 had a feature you could boot into safe mode using the f-8 key I believe but does anyone know if XP has a similar feature & how to access it?
